[ Sometimes, it's a lot easier to do some things with a stranger, Regis knows. Somebody you won't later be ashamed to face when you need your family.
But between Jecht being Jecht (Regis does not in any way dislike the man, but he is fully aware what kind of emotional maturity will take some work to freely reach), and Auron having both a lot of work and his own issues with the situation means that Regis taking up the position makes sense. To him.
And he doesn't actually do things halfway. ]
By the west gate, yes.
[ There is little to no judgment or anger coming from Regis. That might help with everything. And, child, when he has carried a dying kingdom and the knowledge of his son's fate for so long, this is not going to crush him. ]
We can just walk. Even in this season, it is very lovely.
[ And when Tidus goes, Regis will do as much as he can to tidy the kitchen for when the next meal needs to be prepared, then let his staff know he is stepping out and make his way to the west gate fast. He would rather not keep Tidus waiting. ]
[ Tidus shows up last, perhaps with not as much haste as he should. He's got his uniform on, with a jacket thrown over it and the pauldron taken off, just to look less like a sight walking around in it. That, and even he doesn't want to risk getting sick again after the last week.
But he feels no less strange about this, and not because of the outfit. He jogs over the rest of the way once he finally spots Regis, waiting until he stops due to the noise to give him a small and awkward, ] Hiya.
[ And once they begin walking, he'll actually have something to say first himself: a question, that has always been on his mind, but with more curiosity now than before. ]
So... how do you know Auron and my old man anyway? What's the story there?
[ How did the three of them end up living together? ]
[ That... is a lengthy answer right there, but why not? ]
Auron and I arrived at the same time, nearly three years ago now. Both of us... with wounds that needed tending, from back home. Not necessarily physical ones, though, [ he taps his cane twice on the ground to point out that some of them were, and still are, ] it is complicated.
It took us months to begin really talking, and we have been growing closer since. We both had to go through different losses, here, and we were there for each other.
Jecht only showed up much more recently. After having my family here for most of the time - they were here for a long time - I was very glad for him to get some of his, too. Even with how complicated he might be.
[ Yes' he's definitely aware, child. You don't have to defend yourself to Regis. At least up to now. ]
[ It takes Tidus a second to realise what Regis is saying about himself and Auron -- or rather, to connect it to Auron, as strange as that might be. Not physical wounds. Like what? Auron? Never bothered about anything Auron, to the point of frustration, as reliable as it made him as well?
It was hard to imagine.
But it's easy to be pulled away from that thought once Jecht comes up, a small bitter taste in the back of his throat. ]
I'm sorry about your family, [ and he is, saying it and leaving out the sour note that comes after, ] but just because me and Jecht are related...
[ He leaves the 'it's not the same', unsaid, because it isn't. But he does decide to ask--not as a distraction from his dad, though it may sound that way--because the curiosity is still there in his mind: ]
